Finding our Identity

Before the Creation of the World, You Are.

“For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight.” — Ephesians 1:4, NIV.

Unlike the common understanding of the “self” that posits that the self is either a cognitive representation of one’s identity or the dynamic responsive processes one has with the environment [1], Christians should hold onto the fundamental reality that one’s “self” is one’s absolute identity engrained in the fabric of eternity itself [2].

This meant that our identity is not determined by the natural environment. Our value is not determined by what others say we are, much less how we think we are. Rather, our identity and our value were decided by God Himself before the foundations of the universe were laid. We are worth more than many sparrows [3]… And any other thing in the visible universe. In fact, our identity is worth so much that Christ had to pay the ultimate price just so we can be our true “self” again [4].

Our identity was fixed before the foundations of the world. Our calling was written in our hearts before we were placed in the womb. And it is our duty to pray to the Holy Spirit to clear the fog that has blinded our eyes so that the eyes of our heart may be opened to see what God originally intended for us.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” — Jeremiah 1:5, NIV.

Just like how God appointed Jeremiah as a prophet before he was formed in the womb and how God appointed Paul to be an apostle from the time he was in his mother’s womb [5], God is likewise calling us back to our identity — the identity He has predestined for us before the world was made.

This identity has nothing to do with your standard of living nor your “sexual orientation”. Heck. These are all but distractions from the true identity that you possess before your birth. Your true identity is found in Christ; the gate to eternity [6]. This true identity is your calling and purpose. Finding this true identity is to find life.
