What are we offering to God?

Passage:

In the course of time, Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. — Genesis 4:3-4a, NIV.

Reflection:

What were you thinking about when you prepare your offering for the Lord? Were you reflecting on God’s eternal goodness and His wondrous work in your life? Or were you too caught up with the busyness of life that you couldn’t spare a thought for God?

We see a stark contrast in the way how Abel and Cain prepared their offering to God. On one hand, we have Cain bringing some of the fruits of the soil. On the other, we see Abel setting aside the fat portions [1] from some of the firstborn [2] of his flock. That’s some great effort Abel placed into the preparation of his offering! First, he sets aside the firstborn of his flocks. Then, he set aside the fat portions purposefully for the sacrifice to God. Though Abel lived way before the institution of priesthood, Abel actually knew what God delighted in [3].

Abel did not randomly pick some animal or some parts of the animal from his flock as what Cain did. He ensured that every part of his offering to the Lord was the best that he can give.

What about us? When we prepare our weekly offerings, are we setting aside the best that we can give? When we serve in the church, are we preparing the best so that we may give the best to the Lord?

How are we living our lives? Are our lives holy acceptable living sacrifices to the Lord [4]? Are we managing our careers and our families to the best that we can manage? Are we setting goals and dreaming dreams for the Lord?

Prayer:

Father, I thank you for all that You’ve given us. I thank You for all the things that You’ve created for me — my family, my home, my career, my friends, my church. Father, such great love of Yours is something I cannot repay. Father, guard my heart so that my attitude may be right when I approach You to offer my offering to You. Guide me to offer the best of my life to You as a holy and acceptable sacrifice so that my life may be a pleasing aroma to You. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
