Evangelism Revisited — A Reflection of 1 Corinthians 7

All religions help people find God…

Hindu seek Oneness with Creation. [1]
Buddhism seek Oneness with the Universe. [2]
Taoist seek Oneness with Tao — the source of everything. [3]
Muslim seeks to go to Jannah where people will experience the approval of Allah and be near Him. [4]
Sikhs believe that Waheguru (or God) lives inside everyone. Even though they’ll experience a long series of reincarnations, they will one day be returned to Waheguru. [5]

They just need to be directed… Lovingly.

While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols. So he reasoned in the synagogue with both Jews and God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there.
— Acts 17:16-17, NIV.

We should point out with firmness, the Identity of the One True God.

“Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill. In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”
— 1 Corinthians 7:29-31, NIV.

And not force the faith down others’ throats,

Before you try to convert someone — which is something Jews never do, in fact, quite the opposite — consider this. Consider what it’s like on the receiving end. Think of how it can be not just annoying, but insulting.” [6]

Causing unnecessary political obstruction to the spread of the gospel.

“But you have this evangelist man called Seaward, Rick Seaward, from some Redemption Church. He said “go out and convert the Muslims!” You are entitled to do so by the Constitution, but it’s not very helpful, is it? It reached the point where finally the Buddhists came to see me to open their conference because they also feel that “what’s happening? I thought we are going to live and let live, and if this is going to happen, I’m going to assert my rights!”…However hard the Christians can try, they are not going to make Singapore a Christian society. It’s just not possible. They have tried in China and failed.” — Lee Kwan Yew on religious tolerance. [7]
