I am the Way and the Truth and the Life

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know Him and have seen Him.”
(John 14:6-7, NIV)

If you really know me,” Jesus said to a group troubled believers. “You will know my Father as well.”

“I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”

Do you really know Christ?

To understand why Jesus said what He said in the verse, we got to look at what happened beforehand. The disciples have just learnt that one of them is going to betray Jesus. Judas had just departed from their presence. Jesus had just told the disciples that they can’t go to the place Jesus is going, but will follow later. Peter exclaimed that he’s willing to lay his life down for Jesus. And Jesus questioned him saying, “will you really lay down your life for me”?

The disciples were troubled. They do not know how to answer Jesus! Jesus’ question about whether they would really lay down their lives for Him threw the eleven into a state of panic. Is there anything wrong with our faith? Where’s Jesus going? We’ve been with Him for three years! Isn’t He going to be king? What are we to do without Him

You will come to where I am, just not yet.”

“Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

“I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

In a couple of short statements, Jesus has given the answer to all of their concerns. “I am the Way, to the Father”.

What do all these mean?

Jesus is the Way

There are two ways in which we can view what Jesus meant when He said He is the Way. First, He is the Only Way to the Father. We as Christians recognize the work that He has done on the cross. The work that cleanses us from our sins and reconciling us to God (Colossians 1:22), for all have fallen short of the glory of God and all are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Jesus Christ. (Romans 3:23-24, NIV). “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him (Jesus) from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9, NIV). By saved, it meant you will be reconciled with the Father and be brought to Him. We will “realize that I (Jesus) am in my Father, and you (believers) are in Me, and I am in you” (John 14:20, NIV).

No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Jesus is the Only Way.

Jesus is also The Way.

We are called to “be imitators of God” as (His) beloved children (Ephesians 5:1, NASB), following “God’s example” to “walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God” (Ephesians 5:1-2, NIV).

When we look at Jesus with our weary eyes and a total sense of loss, we will know exactly what to do to go to where He is. “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24, NIV). “Whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing” (John 14:12, NIV). He is our role model for life. A moral compass that we should align our lives with. When we are at life’s crossroads and wondering what we’d do in life. Look to Him! What did He do? Do what He does! Do you love Him?

“Feed my lambs”, He said. (John 21:15, NIV). “Follow me.” (John 21:19)

Jesus is The Way.

Jesus is the Truth

Jesus, being the very essence of God, can not lie. For this, He will never change His mind (Numbers 23:19). Hence, the Words He says are the Truth. He is faithful and He will do what He said He will do (1 Thessalonians 5:24). The truthfulness of His Words is undeniable. “All your (God’s) Words are true; all your (God’s) righteous laws are eternal” (Psalms 119:160, NIV). “The Word of the Lord endures forever” (1 Peter 1:25, NIV).

Hence, all that Jesus says, are the Truth.

He is also, The Truth. He is The Word.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him, all things were made; without Him, nothing was made that has been made.” (John 1:1-3, NIV). “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us” (John 1:14a). “We have seen His Glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14b, NIV).

He is the Truth of everything that was created. He was the purpose why everything came into being. He is the spiritual reality of all things (Truth, n.d.). He is the Truth that encompasses the entire reality of the created universe and beyond.

“I (Jesus) was born and came into the World to testify to the Truth,” Jesus answered. “Everyone on the side of Truth listens to me.” (John 18:37, NIV).

“’What is Truth?’ retorted Pilate.” (John 18:38, NIV).

“I am,” Jesus would have whispered in a “still small voice”.

I am, the Truth”.

Jesus is the Life

God spoke life into being. The teachings of God prolong life on earth (Proverbs 3:1-2). He is life. We owe our very existence to God. Our very being points to Him. We were made through Him (John 1:3). He is “the fountain of life” (Psalms 36:9, NIV). “For in Him, we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28, NIV).

He is the giver of Physical Life.

He is also, the compass of Life.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:3-6, NIV). “He instructs sinners in His ways. He guides the humble in what is right, and teaches them His ways.” (Psalms 25:8-9, NIV). He is the right “manner of living”. His teachings are “the forms and patterns” of our reality (life, n.d.). “To live is Christ” and “to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:21, NIV). He is our Life, and His Spirit is in us.

This life is rooted in love. Obedience to His teachings is the result of love. (John 14:23). And He is love (1 John 4:8).

“Because I live, you also will live.” (John 14:19, NIV).

The Eternal Reality

The ultimate reality of the statement, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life” encapsulated the message of the entire gospel. The reunification of the world to the Father was just about to take place on the cross. In the Father is eternal life, and this eternal life is beyond the reach of sinners like us. And on this cross, Christ brought the Father to us. We were reconciled.

This reconciliation is the ultimate purpose of everything that was, is, and will be. Everything that has happened, points to this union with the Father – a union that remains to us, a mystery.

“I am going to the Father.”

“I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”

“I am in the Father and the Father is in me.”

“I in them and you in me – so that they may be brought to complete unity.”

“Then, I saw ‘a new heaven and a new earth,’ for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away.”

“I will be their God and they will be my children.”

“There will be no more death, or mourning, or crying, or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Heaven is in the Father, and Christ is in the Father. Now the Spirit of God is in us. “(He) will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

Heaven begins now.

“I will not leave you as orphans.”

“Surely, I am with you always.”

“I am, The Way, and The Truth, and The Life.”
